On the article SPEAK OUT: Is Maryland’s Move to the Big Ten a Good Thing?

ReplyWithout getting into the pros and cons as a fan, I wonder if anyone has any informed speculation about the impact on the local community. With Big Ten football fans swarming the area a few weekends each year, I expect this to be a boon for area hotels and restaurants. On the other hand, traffic could be awful those entire weekends and the area could get swarmed with obnoxious, out-of-town tailgaters.

ReplyThe Purple Line wouldn't help someone get from Bladensburg to Tysons! The Orange Line would still be the fastest way. This video leads off with an uninformed interviewee.

On the article Despite Residents’ Concerns, Some Students Approve of Cafritz Project

ReplyAs I've said, I think there should be more grocer's or market options in downtown College Park, like a Trader Joe's or something that size - or even something like WaWa which had staples and some fresh produce. That could fit in a space like the old Ford dealership lot - although it doesn't really matter where because there is quite a bit of vacant space around.
If you really have to know, Jon Rybka-Wachhaus, I live in North College Park so I do my shopping at Shoppers and My Organic Market. I guess my standards are not as high as yours.
I suppose if I lived in the southern end of town that the Hyattsville Giant and Yes! would be my closest options; as it happens, I have shopped at both a few times.
But as far as the bigger picture goes, I'm not against Whole Foods, I am just skeptical about the Cafritz development. The developers keep dangling "Whole Foods" as bait to allow a huge development that could end up having limited success (a la University Town Center).

On the article Despite Residents’ Concerns, Some Students Approve of Cafritz Project

ReplyWhy should anyone care about what a Senior-year college student thinks about the development? He won't even be there when it would be built.
Most students have limited knowledge of the communities surrounding the campus area so they probably can't consider the benefits and downsides as equally as long-term residents are.
I also doubt that undergraduate students would shop there - it would be far out of the way, and most undergraduates don't even have kitchens.
There is definitely a need for more grocery or market options in the downtown area, but I don't see the Cafritz development as a solution to that.

ReplyGood thing they didn't charge him. I'm always disheartened to hear about people being charged solely for simple possession. It just drags down our legal system.

ReplyThis would be a shame. The M is one of the loveliest spots in College Park. The so-called "Purple Line" (not a Metrorail line, of course) is becoming even more of a boondoggle.

On the article Speak Out: Why Did You Move to College Park?

ReplyClose to work. Public transportation. Pedestrian-friendly. Friendly neighbors. Family-friendly. And family history - grandparents and great-grandparents lived and owned a business in College Park.

ReplyMy daughter is the same age. As a feminist dad I wouldn't have encouraged Barbies but I haven't discouraged it either.
Our favorite doll of hers might be the surfer/mermaid Barbie. It seems to me somewhat positive since it's vaguely athletic. But it's so much fun that my son, her little brother, likes to play with it too.

On the article MTA: Purple Line Means Faster Travel Times, Less Traffic Congestion

ReplyI don't see how the travel times you cite are significant improvements over existing public transportation travel times. And it is certainly longer than car travel.

Of course ACC fans travel. My impression is that Big 10 football fans will travel more than ACC fans.
