A snowstorm is heading toward Central Maryland and Baltimore County, and may hit Tuesday, and BGE is bringing in 500 extra workers.
UPDATE (5:38 p.m.) A storm heading toward the Baltimore and D.C. Metro areas could dump one or more inches of heavy snow on Baltimore County, beginning overnight Tuesday. A winter storm watch is in effect from Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening, including in Maryland: from Frederick to Baltimore, and Westminster to Annapolis, according to the National Weather Service. There might be "heavy wet snow, gusty winds, possible power outtages," it states. Meteorologist Justin Berk says there could be up to 5 inches in some areas of Central Maryland. Park Heights Avenue in Pikesville and Stevenson, as well as Falls Road, are being worked on after the storm Monday night.
UPDATE (12:42 p.m.)—Part of Falls Road is closed because of storm damage, according to Pikesville Patch's commuter map. And Park Heights Avenue could be open by after 2 p.m. Park Heights Avenue in Pikesville/Stevenson (Now open) Both directions, are blocked due to storm damage, between Hooks Lane in Pikesville, and Hwy 130/Greenspring Valley Road in Stevenson. It's estimated that this will be clear by about 2 p.m. Falls Road in Pikesville The southbound lanes are closed between Highway 133 and Old Pimlico Road. Hwy. 133 is known as Ruxton Road/Old Court Road. It could be cleared by 12:46 p.m. Check with the commuter map for updates, and to see closed or blocked roads in other areas. UPDATE (3:07 p.m.)-If storms from Hurricane Sandy hit Maryland, it could affect early voting that's set for Saturday through Thursday. According to a news release from Gov. Martin O'Malley, the election law allows for postponing early voting during a state of emergency, or it could change the voting locations or voting systems. O'Malley declared a state of emergency on Friday, in anticipation of the storm. "The Governor’s Office and the Maryland Emergency Management Agency are actively monitoring weather developments in order to determine whether changes to the early voting schedule may be necessary to protect public safety," it states. BGE will appear before a City Council committee on Wednesday to discuss how future long-term power outages—such as the power failure experienced by many North Baltimore residents after June’s derecho—can be avoided. According to the council’s legislative calendar, the informational hearing before the Housing and Community Development Committee on the lessons learned from the storm will be held at 5 p.m., at City Hall. Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke introduced the resolution calling for the hearing this summer.
