Learn To Disarm a Shooter: Free Class Sunday

In the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown CT, Masada Tactical in Pikesville will train people to act, even before emergency responders arrive.

A Baltimore County self-defense instructor is leading a free class Sunday on how to disarm a shooter. Tzviel BK Blankchtein, owner and chief instructor at Masada Tactical in Pikesville, said it's his way of helping to protect the community, especially teachers, in the wake of the Dec. 14 Newtown, CT, school shootings. Until officials can find a permanent solution for protecting the schools, it's best to learn self-defense skills to save yourself and others against a shooter in a school or office building, he said. Some Self-Defense Classes Focus on Dance, Fitness

Masada Tactical in Pikesville held an open house Sunday, offering samples of its self defense and fitness classes for residents, as well as its training programs for law enforcement and medical staff.

About a dozen adults and children commanded the crab pose and tried out ground-fighting moves, including kicks. They were taking part in a demonstration of Masada Tactical's Capoiera Fitness. Masada has modified the Brazilian martial art into a fitness class at the Pikesville studio. And it was all being done to the smooth rhythm of Latin music. Sunday was a stormy and rainy day, but on the third floor of 1414 Reisterstown Road, Masada welcomed about 100 interested Pikesville-area residents and Masada members.
