Pimlico Fair Continues through July 4

Entertainment, fireworks and more than 100 rides and games are on tap Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays—and Monday, July 4—at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

Have you heard of the Wild West shows of yesteryear? Good news. You can catch one nearby at Pimlico Race Course—no time-travel required. The Great American Frontier Show is one of many free events on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through July 4, at the Pimlico Fair. The frontier show "features an award-winning horseback rider performing death-defying feats on a galloping horse," a news release states. Additionally, "an Arabian stallion will walk 60 feet across an arena on his hind legs," and the show will feature a giant horse, along with what the news release bills as the biggest and strongest ox in the world. Children can visit the free petting zoo and view other animals such as Texas longhorn cattle, a donkey, a buffalo and small …

A Peek Inside Pimlico: Not Quite the 'Animal Kingdom'

Patch reports from the Infield at the Preakness Stakes.

While the dominant color at the Preakness any year is yellow, the prevailing mood in the infield at the middle jewel of the Triple Crown this year was mellow. For years, Preakness patrons had been allowed to bring their own alcoholic beverages into the Pimlico Race Course and the infield in particular was often a raucous bacchanal. A few years ago, Preakness officials eliminated the BYOB policy and instead, this year, for one price (about $75) race-goers paid for admission to the track plus limitless mugs of beer.  There's still plenty of drinking, but the policy change has toned down the unpleasant edginess.
