Recent city police figures show a 75 percent rise in homicides.
The Northern District experienced an alarming surge in homicides in 2012, according to the latest police figures updated through Dec. 29. The stats showed that the number of homicides jumped by 12 additional cases in 2012, a 75 percent rise from the previous year. Sixteen homicides were recorded in 2011, versus 28 in 2012. At mid-year the district appeared to be heading for a much higher body count when homicides were up 140 percent compared to the same time in 2011. Maj. Sabrina Tapp-Harper, the district commander, said late last year that much of the rise in homicides could be attributed to a struggle between the Black Guerilla Family and the Bloods in the Greenmount Avenue and York Road corridor. The Baltimore police have released stills from video surveillance of the suspected murderers of a 16-year-old boy in hopes of finding the killers. The grainy photos, released by police, show a group of four people walking across Greenmount Avenue through oncoming traffic, pointing weapons toward the west side of the street at about 8 p.m. on Nov. 20. Daniel Pearson, 16, was found at the scene and pronounced dead at an area hospital. A 22-year-old man and a 33-year-old man were also wounded in the shooting. Residents may turn in guns for a $100 certificate no questions asked.
A new Baltimore City program is offering $100 gift certificate to Klein’s ShopRite in exchange for guns, no questions asked. City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young announced the new program on Wednesday morning. Residents will be able to exchange the firearms in exchange for certificates between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Saturday at the Coldstream Homestead Montebello Community Corporation’s headquarters on the campus of City College High School, according to a news release. Two men were reported shot in the 6000 block of Bellona Avenue.
(UPDATE) 9:28 a.m., Friday—Two men were reportedly found shot near the Rosebank and Homeland neighborhoods Thursday night in what police believe was a drug dispute. According to Det. Jeremy Silbert, a police spokesman, the victims were found shot in a car at about 10 p.m. Thursday in the 6000 block of Bellona Avenue. The wounded men, one thought to be in his 20s and another in his 40s, were found in a gold Dodge, and are believed to have driven to that location after being shot. He said each man was shot in the arm and was taken to an area hospital. Their injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. Sgt.
