Hurricane Sandy made landfall in New Jersey a couple of hours ago and Marylanders can expect heavy rain and strong winds for the next 12 hours.
The eye of Hurricane Sandy is making its way through the upper Chesapeake Bay and 280,000 Maryland residents are without power, Gov. Martin O’Malley said Monday night. The storm made landfall near Cape May, New Jersey, earlier Monday night, according to meteorologist Ken Wedelski of the National Weather Service. It is moving on a north/northwest course but is slowing down, moving at about 23 mph. About half of the citizens in Cecil and Harford counties are without power. Hurricane Sandy is moving northward along the East Coast, and could make landfall Monday night or Tuesday morning, bringing winds gusts of up to 55-80 mph.
High winds and heavy rainfall are increasing as Hurricane Sandy makes her way northward along the East Coast. During the day Monday, in the Pikesville area, winds will be 29-39 mph, with gusts of up to 55 mph. But, later Monday, those gusts will increase to 70 mph, according to the National Weather Service forecast for Pikesville. Monday night's weather will be the worst the area receives from the effects of Sandy, which is expected to make landfall in New Jersey tonight, according to the forecast. The National Weather Service forecast calls for thunderstorms by 11 p.m. Monday, and again on Tuesday.
Rain and thunderstorms are ahead for the Pikesville area. According to the National Weather Service, there's a 70 percent chance of those storms, and they could begin by 11 p.m. Monday, bringing up to .25 inches of rain. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Wednesday and Thursday for much of the Washington D.C./ Baltimore Metropolitan Area.
High humidity and temperatures up to 100 degrees the next few days mean we'll have to prevent heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses by staying inside and drinking plenty of fluids. According to the National Weather Service Forecast for the D.C./ Baltmiore Metropolitan area, including Pikesville, temperatures could reach reach into the high 90s Wednesday and up to 100 degrees Thursday. Because of humidity, the temperature could feel hotter: more like 105 degrees. The NWS has issued a heat advisory that's in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday. It looks as if another thunderstorm is in the works, and the National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning this evening for Baltimore, Carroll and Harford counties.
UPDATE (11:15 p.m.)--The thunderstorm did come through Pikesville quickly, but not at the severity the forecast had said was possible. It's a cool 61 degrees outside, with a low of 57 degrees possible, according to the National Weather Service forecast for the area including Pikesville. Monday will be partly sunny, with thunderstorms possible after 2 p.m. The high Monday could be about 74 degrees, the forecast states. The National Weather Service had predicted a 30 percent chance of snow for Monday evening and Tuesday morning, but that forecast has changed to only rain.
UPDATE (6:02 a.m. Monday)—More rain is forecast for Monday and Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. The low Sunday was expected to be about 42 degrees. For Monday, the Pikesville forecast anticipates a high of 47 degrees, with a low of around 36 degrees. The forecast for snow overnight Monday has changed.
