Krieger Schechter Names Middle School Head

Krieger Schechter Day School promotes Assistant Middle School Head Shelley Hendler.

Shelley Hendler will be the new head of Krieger Schechter Day School's Middle School. Hendler, who is currently the assistant head of the school, will take the helm on July 1, according to a release from Krieger Schechter. Dr. Ari Yares, the current head has resigned to take a job at Solomon Schechter of Long Island where he will be director of the high school, the release states. Hendler became assistant head of the Middle School in 2000, after she taught for 20 years at Baltimore County Public Schools, it states. Krieger Schechter Invites Kids to 'Crack the Code'

The next event in the Schechter Science Showcase is set for March 18, and will focus on cryptography, math, genetics and communication.

Society and science use codes in many ways. Kids can learn about codes and how they are used during Krieger Schechter Day School's Science Sunday, set for next month. "The event features special sessions on the use of codes in science and society with the focus on four main topics: cryptography, math, genetics and communication," according to a news release from the school. "Crack the Code" will be held from 1-3 p.m. March 18, the release states. Children in kindergarten through seventh grades will participate with kids in their own grades, it states. Krieger Schechter Chooses New Headmaster from Massachusetts

Krieger Schechter Day School has chosen a new headmaster after a seven-month, nationwide search, according to a news release from the school. On July 1, Bil Zarch, who is head of school at the Lander-Grinspoon Academy in Northampton, MA, will be the second headmaster at Krieger Schechter, the release states. The current headmaster, Dr. Paul Schneider, is retiring after 29 years in the role, according to the school website. This winter, the school held a celebration tour in honor of Schneider. “We are extremely excited to have Bil coming to KSDS,” Mark Neustadt, incoming chairman of the school's board of directors, said in the release. “He has a proven track record of success, and philosophically he aligns perfectly with where we want to …

Krieger Schechter Olympics to Teach History, Service

Next week, Krieger Schechter Middle School students will participate in a three-day learning festival called "KSDS Olympic Games."

Leave it to Krieger Schechter to come up with a fun way for kids to learn and do service projects as well. In a jam-packed, three-day learning festival next week, Middle School students will compete, participate in and learn during the KSDS Olympic Games set for Tuesday through Thursday. Groups of Middle School students will represent 12 countries, according to a school news release. On Tuesday students will learn about their countries, create banners, cheers and presentations that they'll perform and display during an opening ceremony and parade of countries. Winter Care Package Project Wraps Up at Krieger Schechter

The day school collected hundreds of items for Jewish Volunteer Connection Mitzvah Day.

A donation drive at Krieger Schechter Day School successfully collected hundreds of items for Mitzvah Day winter care packages. The "Thankful to Give" program was led by a new Community Service Committee of the school's Parents Association. "We wanted to teach the schoolchildren to be thankful for all they had and to give to those truly in need this winter," program leader Jessamyn Abel said in a news release from the school. The following were collected and will be distributed to the needy on Dec. 25—Mitzvah Day, the release states: Mitzvah Day is an annual event coordinated by the Jewish Volunteer Connection. UPDATE: Science Showcase Debuts Dec. 18 at Krieger Schechter

A quarterly event at the day school will feature hands-on activities led by students' parents and grandparents who work in science.

The Krieger Schechter Day School will tap into a valuable resource in a quarterly science showcase coming to Pikesville—the parents and grandparents of the school's students.  Kids, from 4 to 14, will be able to participate in hands-on activities in chemistry, physics, engineering and other fields of science during a quarterly science showcase. The Schechter Science Showcase will debut from 1-3 p.m., Dec. 18 at the school. Note that this is a change from the time posted in the original version of this story. Fundraiser Set in Memory of 22-Year-Old Pikesville Man

The Sparks of Change Foundation, created in memory of Beth Tfiloh graduate Daniel Siegel, who died last year, kicks off its fundraising efforts from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 22 at Barnes & Noble Booksellers.

At a young age, Daniel Joseph Siegel of Pikesville aspired to affect change in the world. "Interestingly, when he was little, about 4 or 5, he said he wanted to be a changer," said his mother, Janet Berg. And when Siegel, 22, knew he wasn't going to make it because of a brain tumor, he asked his mother if he had made a difference. Siegel's sister and his girlfriend put the word out and "he just got tons of letters from people, about what he had done—how he had influenced them," Berg said. Through the The Sparks of Change Foundation, Berg said her family hopes to continue making a difference in memory of her son. Kristallnacht Commemoration Set for Students at Krieger Schechter

The Krieger Schechter Day School’s lower school (K-4) will participate in a Kristallnacht commemoration Nov. 10 at the school campus. Kristallnacht, also known as the "Night of Broken Glass," commemorates the night in 1938 when Nazis carried out a pogrom against Jewish people in Germany, annexed Austria and the Sudentenland in Czechoslovakia, according to The National Holocaust Museum website. During Kristallnacht, synagogues, Jewish businesses and homes were destroyed and the event gets its name from the broken glass that littered the streets, according to the wbsite. "Significantly, Kristallnacht marks the first instance in which the Nazi regime incarcerated Jews on a massive scale simply on the basis of their ethnicity," the museum …
