One quick turn off of traffic-congested Reisterstown Road is a wealth of Maryland and United States History: The…More Pikesville Military Reservation. Not only is its main building a beautiful, fortress-like design, it's also the Maryland Army National Guard's second-oldest armory, built in 1903 as part of the expansion of the National Guard in the 20th Century.
It is home to the 110th Information Operations Battalion, and the Maryland Defense Force, an unarmed state militia made up of volunteers. At its headquarters in Pikesville, the 110th IO works in military intelligence and signal, and other specialties. It is part of the 56th Theater Information and Operations Group in Seattle. The armory is one of the oldest still operating in the National Guard, and was the home of the historic 110th Field Artillery Regiment until September 2009, when the regiment was deactivated.
Also on the property, closest to Reisterstown Road, is a Maryland Army National Guard Recruiting Center. The Maryland National Guard's oldest armory is the 5th Regiment Armory in Baltimore. Visit the national guard on Facebook or on Flickr. For more historic information on the armory, click here.
