Pikesville is home to state police support services and the homeland security and investigations bureaus. Divisions such as human resources, information technology, facilities management, licensing, drug enforcement and criminal investigation are located within the compound. The state fire marshal's office is also in the compound. According to the historic marker on the site, the oldest building was built in 1816 as an arsenal. It was also used in the Civil War and has been the property of the State of Maryland since 1935. The Maryland State Police Forensic Science Laboratory is on Milford Mill Road.
