The Maryland State Fire Marshal, a department of the Maryland State Police, is headquartered in Pikesville at the State Police compound, 1201 Reisterstown Rd. From its Pikesville location, the department supports eight regional offices in the state, including the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad Unit at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport. Among the department's responsibilities are investigating fires and incidents of explosives, mitigation of explosives and fire protection engineering services. The engineering services help builders implement fire safety designs into commercial and residential buildings. The department assists other agencies as needed and is responsible for fire safety inspection of commercial properties and state-owned properties.
