WHIZ KID OF THE WEEK: Wyatt Olson, Helping Baltimore's Homeless Stay Warm

Wyatt is a first-grader who wants to help keep the homeless warm during the winter and the cold nights of spring.

Name:  Wyatt Olson

School:

Why Wyatt’s Wonderful:  Wyatt, a 7-year-old first-grader, is the brains behind the "Warm A Heart” campaign, which is currently collecting gently used blankets for the homeless of Baltimore.

It all started over the Christmas holiday when Wyatt, his family and a group of older friends drove into the city and delivered blankets to the homeless. The parents in the group were interested in teaching their children about the plight of the homeless, how lucky their own families were, and how to treat all of our fellow human beings—no matter what their current situation.

When he got home that night, Wyatt and his mom talked even more about how he felt that day. He felt happy to help, but sad that they didn’t have enough blankets for everyone they had seen that day.

From that was born Wyatt’s "Warm a Heart" campaign. Wyatt called it this because, “when you pull the blanket up and you put it over your heart it keeps you warm.”

Wyatt’s school has gotten involved in the project as well. Wyatt presented his idea to the student council, and once it was approved boxes were set up for collection.  The school hopes to help Wyatt achieve his goal of keeping as many people as warm as possible during the cold winter and spring nights.

If you are interested in donating a gently used blanket (in a plastic bag, so it stays dry!) please email Wyatt’s mom at sueolson5@hotmail.com.
