The Associated’s Teen Giving Initiative Hosts Fundraiser To Combat Bullying

During our first seminar as fellows of the ASSOCIATED’s Teen Giving Initiative (TGI), our leader, Amy Steinberg, assigned us with the hefty task of choosing the three focus issues our group would research and support over the course of the year-long program. We hadn’t realized how tough this decision would be.

A diverse group of passionate and involved teenagers, we all felt strongly that our favorite cause be chosen. In the midst of a heated debate about the importance of environmental responsibility, one of the fellows stopped and said, “Wait. Why don’t we fight against bullying?” The room unanimously agreed.

To help us combat bullying, we invite you to take part in our effort by participating in our “uSpoon, uGive” fundraiser this Sunday, October 28th, from 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. at uSpoon Frozen Yogurt in Owings Mills.

Twenty percent of the proceeds from that day of business will be donated to this important cause. Be sure to try out the new TGI special-vanilla and chocolate yogurt with M&Ms! See you then.

As teens, we are the primary perpetrators and recipients of bullying and, as teens, we carry the responsibility to make a change. Though we were somewhat aware of its prevalence, the statistics shocked us: 25 percent of kids are regularly bullied and, each day, 160,000 students miss school in fear of the tormenting that awaits them there. Now, with the increasing use of cyber-bullying, the issue only grows. How can we stand by as our friends and peers are victimized?
