“Doomsday” Averted?

When the Maryland legislature failed to pass a budget in the final hours of the General Assembly Session in April, it set into motion a “doomsday” scenario. Unless legislators can take care of unfinished business, $500 million in spending cuts will go into effect. Jewish Community Services would be directly affected, along with several other ASSOCIATED agencies, should the legislature fail to act.
The Baltimore Jewish Council joined a large interfaith coalition in calling on our state leaders to reconvene and avert “doomsday.” The group held a press conference on Monday, April 4, and sent a letter, signed by 32 faith leaders to Governor O’Malley, Speaker of the House Michael Busch, and Senate President Mike Miller, calling on them to resolve the state’s budget impasse.

Now, Governor O’Malley has called a special session for Monday, May 14. It is expected the House and Senate will pass an income tax increase that would cover the cuts and avert “doomsday.” But, there are no guarantees. The Baltimore Jewish Council’s Government Relations team will be in Annapolis, working with our coalitions, and we will keep you updated.
