Pikesville Field Hockey Wins Three in a Row

Panthers win twice, edging Parkville and routing Woodlawn.

posted a pair of shutouts this week, beating Woodlawn and to get over the .500 mark for the season.

Pikesville improved to 3-2 this season and has won three straight games after opening the season with two consecutive losses.

Pikesville’s offense had problems in the first two games this season, scoring just one goal in losses to Hereford and Franklin. However, the team has come together in its last three matches, posting 16 goals for three stragith victories.

Everything began to change last week with a 5-2 victory over Carver A&T. The tougher game this week was against Parkville. The Panthers needed a Lacey Kurlander goal to beat the Knights in that contest.

But the Woodlawn game wound up being much easier in a lot of ways. The Panthers saw goals from five different players and points from seven overall as they rolled to a 10-0 shutdown against the Warriors.

Kurlander led the way again, scoring four goals this time. Alexa Ain and Liza Varhaftik each added two goals while Jessica Picket and Cara Saval each scored once.

Stephanie Honig and Ryann Plotkin also helped with assists in that win. Honig stayed busy with three of them, and Plotkin, who scored a goal in last week’s win over Carver, added an assist.

Pikesville coach Holly Warner said she liked what she saw this week, but the Panthers still have plenty to work on since it’s early in the season.

“We have learned from this week that we still need to improve specific aspects of our game,” Warner said. “We will continue to work and focus on those specific things with each upcoming game and practice.”

The Panthers will be on the prowl for their next win when they travel to Kenwood High School Tuesday for a 3:45 p.m. match-up.
