Girls Basketball: James Scores for Pikesville in All-Star Game

Pikesville guard helps fourth-quarter rally in Baltimore City/County Senior All-Star Game.

All-Star basketball games can be hard for players to really stand out—coaches spend a lot of their time trying to get everyone in.

In addition, there’s not a whole lot of passing going on and even less defense being played.

But Pikesville guard Ronje’ James managed to stand out March 18. She played a solid game and scored eight points for Baltimore County, whose late rally fell short as Baltimore City pulled out a 79-77 victory in the annual Senior All-Star Game.

James scored six of those eight points in the fourth quarter as the county climbed back from a 14-point deficit early in the period and cut the lead to two in the final moments at Lake Clifton.

“It was really intense,” James said. “I was playing with and in front of friends (that) I’ve played with (for awhile).”

The three-point shot she made helped the county start to rally after the city took a 63-49 lead in the first minute of the fourth quarter. She added one free throw midway through the period before making two foul shots that sliced the lead to 72-68 with 2:24 left.

James, a 5-foot-5 guard, did a good job handling the ball against the quick city backcourt. She helped the county move the ball around. James didn’t play the normal amount of time she does in a Pikesville game because the coaches were rotating all of the players—and that let them find more open shots.

The senior started for two years at Pikesville and was a big part of the Panthers’ offense. James said she’s hoping to go to Frostburg. In addition, she was very happy to get her chance to shine in the all-star game, showing her ability to play with top players.

“It was a really good and happy experience,” James said. “I liked it.”
