Baseball: Greenberg's Sac Fly Gives PHS Victory Over Kenwood

Softball: Pikesville High School falls to 0-2 with loss against Hereford.

The Pikesville High School varsity baseball team used some late-inning heroics to beat Kenwood on Friday, March 25.

Zach Greenberg’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 7th inning scored the winning run and gave the Panthers a 9-8 victory over Kenwood.

What happened in the seventh symbolized what Pikesville did during the game. Kion Wright started the winning rally with a walk—and then stole second base.

Ross Hyatt then sacrificed him over to third. Kenwood intentionally walked pinch-hitter Drew Stern to get to Greenberg, who sent a fly ball to center that was deep enough to bring in Wright and give the Panthers the victory.

Coach Joseph Kramer said he was delighted with how his team got two sacrifice bunts plus three sacrifice flies to help pull out the win.

“This unselfish baseball is what led us to victory,” Kramer said.

Brad Garfield helped the Panthers with two hits, two steals, two runs and one RBI. He also pitched a scoreless top of the 7th to set up the winning rally.

Tyler Kennedy started and struck out six, and scattered six hits over six innings.

Varsity softball

The Panthers didn’t fare so well in softball March 25.

The varsity team got in trouble right from the start, and dropped a 23-2 decision to Hereford High School in a five-inning game.

The game didn’t go past five innings since the Bulls had more than a 10-run lead after it became official, according to Coach Michael Behrens.

Errors hurt the Panthers from start to finish. They made several miscues in the early innings, and helped Hereford jump out to a quick 11-0 lead.

Abby Molofsky and Jess Rubin got hits as the Panthers got some offense going later on before the game ended.

Pikesville fell to 0-2 with the loss. The Panthers are scheduled to play four games this week.
