Earlier this month, Drs. Marc and Barbara Honig had an important decision to make.

Both of their children, Stephanie Elana and Evan Louis, were being honored at fine events, but at different places—and at the same time.

Stephanie and Evan were each to receive a scholarship from The Carson Scholars Fund, named after famous Baltimore neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson. Along with the $1,000 scholarship comes the title "Carson Scholar."

The scholarships are awarded to students in fourth through 11th grades who not only excel in academics but who also serve the community, giving their time and energy.

The Honigs ultimately decided to go in different directions for the events. One would go to Philadelphia, and one would stay here for the scholarship ceremony at Martin's West in Woodlawn.

In addition to being invited to the event in Woodlawn, Stephanie also was invited to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia for a special sports event. She traveled there with her mother and grandmother. (Stephanie has won the Carson scholarship almost yearly since 2007.)

Evan went with his father and grandfather to Martin's West for the awards luncheon.

Stephanie, 17, is a junior at Pikesville High School, where Evan, 14, is a freshman.

Stephanie is co-captain of the girls varsity field hockey and lacrosse teams. She has been on the honor roll since middle and high school, and gives of her spare time to numerous charities, including SADD, Students Against Destructive Decisions.

She is graphic art director for the school newspaper, and was elected as the 2012 archivist/historian for her class. She was also nominated to be the student member of the Board of Education of Baltimore County.

Stephanie said she hopes to become a physician like her parents, or a biomedical researcher. She is also involved in many after-school programs.

Evan is a member of the school’s cross country, indoor track and baseball teams, and has been on the honor roll each quarter in middle and high school.

He collects new and used prescription eyeglasses for distribution to underprivileged patients who need them, and raises funds for UNICEF, a global child survival movement. Evan also visits seniors at Weinberg Village in Owings Mills.

In 2007, he took part in a 5K race to raise money for a Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis disease research organization, and he has helped with a winter preparedness program for seniors in northwest Baltimore County.

Evan's list of good deed missions is lengthy. He said he aspires to a career in medicine, business or engineering.

Stephanie and Evan are a delightful and thoughtful brother and sister. They incorporate in their teenage lives the power to transcend what is expected of them at their young ages.

They produce excellence in their school studies and athletic activities.
