Pikesville Middle School Students Qualify for Mathcounts Competition

The top for state winners will head to the 2012 Raytheon Mathcounts National Competition.

Three students will compete at the state Mathcounts Competition March 17.

Michael Pelekhaty, Eli Fastow and Matthew Eisenberg are among the 10 individuals and two teams to qualify, according to a news release from Baltimore County Public Schools.

The competition, part of a national program, will be held at Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus, the release states.

Two teams—from and middle schools—will also compete, as well as the following students, the release states:

  • Aaron Magaziner of
  • Jacob Ingalls and Kevin Chen of Perry Hall Middle School
  • Angela Zhang and Ari Wu of
  • David Rus and Hunter Field of Hereford Middle School

Mathcounts is a national program in which middle school students solve oral and written, timed mathematics problems, according to the release.

The BCPS’ students qualified for state competition by competing in the annual Baltimore/Chesapeake Chapter Competition held Feb. 4 at Perry Hall Middle School, it states.

More than 175 mathletes from Baltimore City and Baltimore, Howard, Harford and Cecil counties participated.

The four who win the state competition will win an all-expenses paid trip to the 2012 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition, which will be held in Orlando, Florida, May 10–13, 2012, the release states.
