'Newsweek' Ranks Pikesville High School Among Top Schools in U.S.

PHS is among seven high schools in the Baltimore County Public Schools System to get the honor.

Pikesville High School is among the top 500 schools in the United States, according to a new national review of high schools by Newsweek magazine.

Pikesville is 338th on the list, and is among the seven Baltimore County public schools on the list, according to a news release from the school system.

The seven are among only 18 Maryland schools on the list published Sunday, titled "Best American High Schools."

“We already know that Baltimore County’s high schools are among the best in the nation based on a variety of factors,” stated Superintendent Dr. Joe A. Hairston in the release. “This study, as others have shown this year, validates the work that is going on every day in all of our schools to prepare young people for a challenging but promising future.”

The magazine gathered information on schools throughout the country by asking 10,000 public high schools' administrators to report information such as graduation rates, college enrollment, average SAT scores, per-student number of Advanced Placement (AP) tests taken and average AP scores, the release states.

The project is jointly sponsored by Newsweek and its corporate partner, the Daily Beast website.

County schools on the list are:

  • Eastern Technical High School in Essex (ranked 131)
  • Hereford High School in Hereford (ranked 219)
  • George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson (ranked 232)
  • Pikesville High School in Pikesville (ranked 388)
  • Towson High School in Towson (ranked 413)
  • Loch Raven High School in Towson (ranked 433)
  • Dulaney High School in Timonium (ranked 446)

Study authors Clark Merrefield, Lauren Streib and Ian Yarrett wrote, "We consulted a group of experts ... to develop a yardstick that fully reflects a school’s success turning out college-ready (and life-ready) students.”
