Megillat Esther: Who's the True Hero?

Rabbi Yaakov Chaitovsky from Shoshanna S. Cardin School will present the case for Esther during the Taste of Limmud event Saturday at Johns Hopkins' Hillel Center.

Who is the real hero of the Scroll of Esther—the Purim story? Is it Esther or Mordechai?

During an event Saturday night at Hopkins Hillel, Rabbi Yaakov Chaitovsky of the in Pikesville, will present his case for Esther.

And Rabbi Miriam Burg, director of Educational Engagement for the Macks Center for Jewish Education in Baltimore will present the case for Mordechai.

They'll debate on what it takes to make a true hero during A Taste of Limmud event, held by Limmud Baltimore.

Esther is the beautiful Jewish woman who marries King Ahashverus of Persia, thus saving Jews from destruction by Haman.

And Mordecai, Esther's uncle, helps her marry.

According to the event website, this debate could shed new light on the traditional story.

The event is set for 8:15-9:45 p.m. Saturday at Hopkins Hillel,
3109 North Charles St. in Baltimore. Cost is $5 per person.
