Kristallnacht Commemoration Set for Students at Krieger Schechter

Stories, flower bulbs planting, part of school's activities.

The ’s lower school (K-4) will participate in a Kristallnacht commemoration Nov. 10 at the school campus.

Kristallnacht, also known as the "Night of Broken Glass," commemorates the night in 1938 when Nazis carried out a pogrom against Jewish people in Germany, annexed Austria and the Sudentenland in Czechoslovakia, according to The National Holocaust Museum website.

During Kristallnacht, synagogues, Jewish businesses and homes were destroyed and the event gets its name from the broken glass that littered the streets, according to the wbsite.

"Significantly, Kristallnacht marks the first instance in which the Nazi regime incarcerated Jews on a massive scale simply on the basis of their ethnicity," the museum website stated.

The commemoration at Krieger Schechter begins Nov. 10 when Saundra Madoff, academic head of the lower school, shares a story with the kindergarten and first-grade classes.

At 1:40 p.m., the second-, third- and fourth-graders will gather in the chapel for a commemoration ceremony.

At 2 p.m., the entire lower school will plant flower bulbs on the school grounds.
