Krieger Schechter Olympics to Teach History, Service

Next week, Krieger Schechter Middle School students will participate in a three-day learning festival called "KSDS Olympic Games."

Leave it to Krieger Schechter to come up with a fun way for kids to learn and do service projects as well.

In a jam-packed, three-day learning festival next week, Middle School students will compete, participate in and learn during the KSDS Olympic Games set for Tuesday through Thursday.

Groups of Middle School students will represent 12 countries, according to a school news release.

On Tuesday students will learn about their countries, create banners, cheers and presentations that they'll perform and display during an opening ceremony and parade of countries.

And they'll attend sessions about the origins of the Olympics, arts, cooking, sports and culture.

On Wednesday the games move to the where students' countries will compete in sporting events, the release states.

Also that day they'll put together packages for HIV/AIDS patients at Johns Hopkins Hospital and for homeless children at Sarah's Hope emergency shelter.

They'll experience a grand finale Thursday back at the school.

"On Thursday morning, representatives from the Special Olympics and Paralympics will visit Krieger Schechter to engage in activities with the students, including presentations from coaches and athletes, the Maryland Ravens Wheelchair Basketball Team and a joint performance with the Krieger Schechter and Special Olympics cheerleading squads," the release states.

Seminars for students on Thursday include health and math as well as Jewish history in the Olympic Games, the release states.
