Keeping Cool When the Heat is Rising

Tips on how to keep cool when the temperatures are rising.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Baltimore County and the greater metropolitan area beginning Thursday and continuing for the next several days.

The forecast for Baltimore County and the surrounding area is between 98-100 degrees. The heat index values will rise between 105-111. In other words, it’s going to be very hot!

The air quality is projected to be unhealthy (code orange and boarding on code red) for sensitive groups including young children, elderly, pets, people with asthma and other respiratory conditions.

Here are few tips to help you keep cool and conserve energy during these hazy, hot and humid days.

Before you leave home remember to:

  • Keep the blinds and curtains drawn.
  • Set your air conditioning unit to approximately 72 degrees.
  • Apply skincare moisturize to your face which contains an SPF.
  • Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin, including your feet.
  • Dress in comfortable and lightweight attire.
  • Wear sunglasses, sun visor or a sun hat.
  • Carry an umbrella (for shade when walking in the sun).
  • Pack a light lunch, snacks and bottled water.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
