Kamenetz Dedicates New Hazmat Unit at Brooklandville Fire Station

Baltimore County recertified as "storm ready."

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz dedicated a new state-of-the-art hazardous materials unit at the Brooklandville Fire Station Monday morning.

Hazmat 114 will be housed at the Brooklandville station. It cost $470,449 and will replace a unit that was 23 years old. That unit responded to a total of 389 incidents in 2010 and 2011.

"A lot, we think, has changed in [hazardous materials] response since that [previous unit] was constructed 23 years ago," Kamenetz said.

This is one of three improvements in the county’s disaster response capabilities that Kamenetz recognized during a press conference at the station. Kamenetz and Emergency Management Director Mark Hubbard signed the county’s recently updated Emergency Operations Plan and acknowledged that Baltimore County was recently recertified as “storm ready.”

This certification is a formal notice that the county has met the needed safety and preparedness requirements for preparing its citizens for severe weather events when they occur.
