Warehime Continues 300-Mile Memorial Ride

The group began its journey in Pennsylvania and will ride to Washington, DC, where the participants will escort family and friends of fallen police officers to a candlelight memorial ceremony on Saturday.

Sgt. Vickie Warehime of the Baltimore County Police Department is on a mission: to cycle about 300 miles in honor of fallen police officers.

She is part of the 2012 Police Unity Tour that began on Wednesday and ends on Saturday in Washington, DC, where the riders will honor fallen officers at a candlelight vigil.

The group rode 100 miles from Valley Forge, PA, that first day.

Yesterday, they stopped to honor Sgt. Joseph Szczerba of New Castle County, Delaware, who died in September 2011.

"A man who loved all and gave all," Warehime texted from the ceremony. "He was a close friend of a friend of mine. The pain runs deep."

Warehime said Szczerba was allegedly stabbed in the neck by a suspect in a car break-in.

"Another reminder of why we ride and honor our brothers and sisters. Sorry for getting sentimental," she said.

The ride continues today, and Warehime will be texting updates and photos to Pikesville Patch.
