VIEWFINDER: Emergency Shelter Drill

If a disaster strikes our area, Baltimore County emergency management officials are ready to set up emergency shelters. They honed their skills April 20.

If disaster should strike in Baltimore County, emergency shelters will be set up, among other services.

Here's a glimpse into the sights disaster victims and officials would see if there's an emergency requiring a shelter—lines, registration, makeshift dormitories in public buildings, and lots of coordination between first responders and volunteers.

On April 20, Baltimore County emergency management officials and other first-responders practiced activating a shelter for disaster-stricken residents, according to Baltimore County Fire Department Officials.

About 35 volunteers from the community were expected to participate in the drill, said Elise Armacost, public information officer for the Baltimore County Fire Department. Pets were involved, and volunteers played the roles of disaster victims.
