The heat-related death of a 16-month old girl has been ruled an accident by the state medical examiner.

An autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled that Sabriya Towels died July 5 of cardiac arrest as a result of hyperthermia, according to a statement released by the Baltimore County Police Department.

The toddler was found in a truck in the 4100 block of McDowell Lane in Lansdowne just before 1 p.m. Friday. Police said an unidentified male relative was supposed to drop the girl off at the Highland Village Head Start Center that morning.

Instead, the relative picked up the child and went to a home in the  2700 block of S. Paca St. in West Baltimore and went inside to sleep for a few hours.

The man later went to the center to pick up the girl but realized she had never been dropped off.

The child was taken to St. Agnes Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

County police Monday said the incident is being referred to the Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office for a review and to determine if charges will be filed.
