Storm Causes Power Outages, County Asks Residents to Limit Water Use

Residents report widespread power outages and flying debris. The county is asking residents to limit water use due to a loss of power at water treatment facilities.

Updated: (10:40 a.m.)—Hundreds of residents in the Odenton and Severn area lost power and saw large amounts of flying debris Friday night when a powerful storm came through the Baltimore-Washington region.

Anne Arundel County has asked residents in the north and west sections of the county to limit water use between now and July 2 due to a loss of power at water treatment facilities.

The county said in a phone message to residents that they should not expect a reduction in pressure, but that they want to ensure there is adequate water pressure for firefighters who may need it.

Heavy winds and rain arrived shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday. Within minutes, large tree branches broke off trees, trash cans were tossed across yards and house lights flickered.

As of Saturday morning, Baltimore Gas and Electric reported more than 421,000 customers without power, including about 94,000 customers without power in Anne Arundel County.

Early reports from residents indicated there were power outages in the Lions Gate community and in Four Seasons, Seven Oaks and portions of Piney Orchard.

The National Weather Service said winds more than 70 miles an hour had been reported in parts of the region. Hail the size of quarters was also possible, the NWS said.

Radar showed a massive storm sytem stretching as far north as central Pennsylvania and south into Virginia.

"This is a serious situation," the NWS said. "You need to take cover now."
