Scholarship Set Up for Six Children of State Trooper Shaft Hunter

The family of the trooper killed in the line of duty announces a scholarship fund to benefit his children.

The family of Trooper First Class Shaft S. Hunter, who in Howard County, has established a fund to benefit his six children, ages 4-19.

Maryland State Police issued a news release Thursday, outlining how to donate to The Hunter Children's Scholarship Fund.

"All donations will be used to provide for the education of TFC Hunter's six children," the release states. "The Hunter family and the members of the Maryland State Police are grateful for the support of citizens across the state ... during this difficult time."

Donations can be made at any in Maryland or can be mailed. The address is: M&T Bank, 207 Bowie Road, Laurel, MD 20707.

According to a state police news release issued the day Hunter died, a witness who was driving on I-95 said he was passed by a motorcycle and then by a marked state police car. Moments later, the patrol car struck the rear of a tractor-trailer. Hunter died at the scene.

The tractor-trailer driver had parked on the side of the interstate to check directions to his destination, police said.

The accident occurred at about 2:40 a.m. on southbound I-95, south of Rte. 32 near the entrance ramp to the rest area.

Hunter, 39, a resident of Reisterstown, and former Marine, was on duty doing road patrol for Waterloo Barrack when the accident occurred.

His name will be placed on the state police memorial next year at headquarters in Pikesville.
