The crash occurred at about 2:40 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release Saturday that identifies Hunter as the deceased trooper.

"A preliminary investigation indicates TFC Hunter was southbound on I-95 when he struck a tractor trailer that was parked on the shoulder of the interstate, just before the entrance ramp to the rest area," the release states.

"A witness told investigators he was passed by a motorcycle that was traveling at a high rate of speed just before being passed by a marked state police car. Moments later, the witness said, the patrol car struck the rear of the tractor trailer."

Next year, Hunter's name will be placed on the State Police memorial in Pikesville, she said.

The annual Maryland State Police Fallen Heroes Ceremony is held in Pikesville during National Police Week. This year's ceremony was held May 17, four days before Hunter died.

Hunter is "the 43rd state trooper to make the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the people of Maryland," according to a police news release.

He is the father of six children, ages 4-19.
