Second Day of Cycling—160 Miles So Far—is Complete

Pikesville's Sgt. Vickie Warehime, along with hundreds of other police officers, are cycling from New Jersey to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness of fallen law enforcement officers.

(UPDATE 5:57 p.m. May 10)—So maybe you can't cycle 66 miles in one day, then eat, sleep, wake up, cycle 102 miles, and do it again the next day (and the next)—for a total of 320 miles.

That's OK. Sgt. Vickie Warehime of the Baltimore County Police Department is doing it for all of us, cycling from New Jersey to Washington, D.C., and she's sending updates and photos to Pikesville Patch from the road.

Warehime represents the county, Precinct 4/Pikesville, and specifically the late Sgt. Bruce A. Prothero, who died in Pikesville in Feb. 2000, in the Police Unity Tour 2011—a national, annual bicycle ride to honor fallen law enforcement officers.

At about 9 a.m. Tuesday she was in Highstown, NJ. The group plans to cross the Commodore Barry Bridge, across the Delaware River, this afternoon. She and hundreds of other cyclists will ride through to Wilmington, DE, where they will rest for the night.

They began their journey Monday in Florham, NJ, and rode through New York City and around Ground Zero in honor of those who died there nearly 10 years ago. They rode a total of 66 miles that day.

Waking up the next morning, "It's tough getting back on the bike, but then you realize why you are riding!" she said in a text message.

But she did it. And as of 5:50 p.m. she had ridden 102 miles Tuesday (wow!) and was calling it a day in Wilmington, Del.

"We Ride for Those Who Died" is the Unity Tour motto. Through the event, the police cyclists raise awareness of police officers who died, and raise money to maintain the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Warehime is among the 1,200 riders nationwide who each had to raise a minimum of $1,800 to participate.

The cycling ends Thursday, and the event culminates with a candlelight memorial service on Friday, held along with surviving family members, at the national memorial in Washington.

Memorial May 13 in Towson

There's still a chance to show your support and to honor fallen law enforcement officers from the Baltimore County Police Department.

A Baltimore County event will be held at 10 a.m. May 13, at the Patriot Plaza, 401 Bosley Ave., Towson. There, the Baltimore County Police Department will gather to honor officers who died in the line of duty, as well as those who died while serving county residents, according to a statement.

Eight Baltimore County police officers, including Prothero, have died in the line-of-duty in the history of the department.
