According to the release, Bouie was upstairs in his home with his wife feeding their one-month-old son. He went downstairs and found Shird who had just broken into the home through a rear basement window.

Shird struggled with Bouie, and then shot Bouie three times. Shird accidentally shot himself before he ran, the release states. An 11-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy were asleep in the house at the time of the murder.

Shird was arrested a week later in Lancaster County, VA. A handprint of the defendant was found on a neighbor's window and a dreadlock of hair was found under the victim's body. That lock matched Shird's DNA, the release states.

The case was prosecuted by Daniel Trimble and Thomas Tompsett of the Baltimore County State's Attorney’s Office, the release states.
