Pikesville Precinct Commander To Retire

Capt. Roman Zaryk, who has commanded the Pikesville precinct for the past four years, will work his last day with the Baltimore County Police Department on June 15.

Pikesville says goodbye to its law enforcement leader next week.

Capt. Roman Zaryk retires June 16 after nearly 26 years with the Baltimore County Police Department.

"Captain Zaryk has served the agency well for many years," said Chief James W. Johnson. "His expertise, particularly in the area of homeland security matters, has been of great benefit to the department. He will be missed by the agency."

Zaryk, who is known for keeping a low, behind-the-scenes profile, worked as commander of the Intelligence section of the department for 6 1/2 years before commanding the Pikesville precinct.

During his career, he's also worked at the Towson, Wilkins and Woodlawn precincts, as well as in Internal Affairs, Narcotics, the Robbery Criminal Investigation Division at headquarters in Towson.

Zaryk and his wife plan to spend a week at the shore immediately following his retirement, Zaryk said Thursday. "After that, we will see."

He said he's proud to have worked at the Pikesville precinct. But that's not because of a particular case, investigation, arrest or event.

Rather, he's most proud of "Just being able to work with these folks and serving this community ... serving the citizens," he said of Pikesville. "There are some very outstanding officers assigned here."
