New Assistant Commander Addresses Police Group

Lt. William Lally, who worked for Baltimore County Police Department's Garrison precinct in the early 1990s, replaces Lt. Jay Landsman in Pikesville.

Lt. William Lally has been around—both the Baltimore County Police Department and Pikesville.

In the early 1990s, the new assistant commander for the Pikesville precinct worked for the Garrison precinct for six years.

During that time, he spent more than three years in the Pikesville area, including in Villa Nova, before becoming a detective in the county's Criminal Investigations Division.

And on Tuesday, he spoke to the Pikesville Precinct Police & Community Relations Council.

"Even though I've been here for a while, there's still a lot of things I need to get acclimated to," said Lally, a 21-year veteran of the department.

For example, since he worked here last, Quarry Lake at Greenspring shopping center and have been built, he told the council.

That's the same area he used to frequent when he was working on catching thieves stealing vehicles, he said.

But Quarry Lake was more rural back then, and police used to wait at Sugarcone and Greenspring avenues where stolen cars would show up.

"That's why we started the Auto Theft Task Force, because of the problem in this area," Lally said. But that's not a big problem any longer.

Also since he worked here last, the store has been moved a little bit, and 's building burned down and has been moved to its new location.

As Lally gets used to the daily routine at the precinct, commanded by Capt. Roman Zaryk, he said he's impressed so far.

"The precinct itself, it is a very, very good precinct. The officers here care an awful lot about their jobs and they will do anything for you if you ask ... and with earnest and genuine concern," if its within their capabilities, he said.

The officers have respect for Lally as well, said Sgt. Vickie Warehime, who introduced him during the PCRC meeting.

"He's very well-connected to the other agencies (in the department) which is great because that means we get the information and the resources," she said.

The Pikesville Precinct opened in 2005.
