Fire Leaves Two Pikesville Apartments Uninhabitable

Firefighters made plans to evacuate about 70 residents of Pavilion In The Park apartments, 4001 Old Court Road, but it wasn't necessary. Instead, residents waited in the building's lobby until firefighters finished.

A fire in a second-story apartment Monday night left two apartments at uninhabitable, said Division Chief Jon Kuruc of the Baltimore County Fire Department.

The department had planned for an evacuation, but, because they got the fire under control, and confined to only one apartment. The evacuation never happened.

"Initially, we had a fairly large evacuation of people, about 70-some people (planned). That's why we have the MTA bus out," Kuruc said, referring to the bus that was parked across the street from the apartment building, located in Pikesville.

But the bus remained empty for the night.

"The fire is under control, the smoke is all out, there were no injuries, and the majority of the people are back in their residences. Everything is fine, with the exception of two apartments," he said at just before midnight Tuesday.

The Red Cross might help find lodging for those residents who are displaced, or the apartment management might be able to find other units for them to stay in, Kuruc said.

The fire was confined to one apartment, and the cause is under investigation, he said.

While the call was considered a 'normal' call, more fire trucks and units arrived, since they had just finished up a call in nearby Randallstown, when they heard about the fire at Pavilion In The Park. Units who responded included county Station No. 2, Pikesville, a department from Lutherville-Timonium and Owings Mills, among others.
