A multi-story home in the Ralston B community was damaged by fire Monday afternoon not long after a high-voltage line was downed two houses away.

No one was at home at the time of the blaze and no one was injured.

Fire officials could not say whether there was a connection between the house fire at 618 Military Ave., where firefighters responded before 3 p.m., and a downed power line at 622 Military Ave.

"We had a house fire ... Crews got here, and had fire on the first floor, extending up to the second floor (the bedroom), the kitchen and all," said Batallion Chief Joe Brown of the Baltimore County Fire Department.

Brown said the cause of fire remains under investigation, and he could not give a cost of damages.

A broken, downed power line was visible in the yards at three homes, from 618 to 622 Military Ave. The house at 620 Military Ave., also suffered smoke damage as a result of the neighboring house fire, Brown said.

"BGE was here earlier for an electrical line down next door (at 618 Military Ave.), a high voltage line (was) down, but we're not sure exactly what the cause is (of the fire at 622 Military Ave.)," Brown said.

Linda Zeigler, who lives at 618 Military Ave., described her experience earlier in the day when the power line fell outside her home, two houses from the fire.

The downed power line fell during pleasant weather but was followed by a thunderstorm, she said.

"I was stuck in my house with my dogs," for 1 1/2 hours because of the live wire outside, she said.

During that time, "When the rain came, it just exploded," she said of the downed line. But the rain also put out a fire on a singed portion of her roof, she said.

She was also able to contact the residents who live at 622 Military Ave., to tell them of the fire, she said.

"I'm the watchdog of all these houses around here," she said.

The high-voltage line, no longer live, was visible across the three front yards as firefighters worked to extinguish the housefire.

Zeigler's front yard was singed in the areas where the power line fell, and parts of the flowering bushes were singed as well.

Working to extinguish the fire were members of the Garrison, Pikesville, Woodlawn and Randallstown stations, as well as the Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company, Brown said.
