Cyclists Round Ground Zero, Complete 66 Miles of 320-Mile Unity Ride

Precinct 4/Pikesville Sgt. Vickie Warehime sends photos and updates from the road during Unity Tour 2011, an event that honors fallen law enforcement officers.

(UPDATE 3:53 p.m. May 9)—Cyclists, including Sgt. Vickie Warehime of the Baltimore County Police Department Precinct 4/Pikesville, have completed 66 miles during their first day of the Unity Tour 2011.

"A few good crashes and 12 flat tires later, we are all feeling good," Warehime said in a text message. "Time to eat and sleep."

Warehime and hundreds of other police cyclists began their more than 320-mile ride Monday morning in New Jersey and looped around Ground Zero in New York City.

The ride benefits the families of fallen officers, by drawing awareness to their service, and provides money to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Warehime will feed photos into Pikesville Patch throughout her four-day journey, ending with a memorial ceremony Friday with 1,200 other cyclists and family members of fallen officers.

Warehime and other participants each had to raise $1,800 to take part in the ride. That includes money that will help maintain the memorial.
