Consumers Union Asks Trader Joe’s To Stop Offering Antibiotics-Fed Meats

Antibiotics were introduced in 1944 and were thought to be a miracle cure for a wide variety of diseases. Understanding that overuse would develop antibiotic-resistant strands of bacteria, they were to be used sparingly in order to preserve their effectiveness.
A video from Fix Food, entitled Fix Antibiotics – Meat Without Drugs shares that 80% of the antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used on farm animals, primarily for animals to grow faster and survive crowded, unsanitary conditions. And as it could have been predicted, this has led to the development of “superbugs," antibiotic-resistant bacteria that contaminating the air, the water, and our food. Now, drugs that were once considered miracle cures are becoming ineffective against life-threatening diseases.
Consumers Union (publisher of Consumers Report magazine) recently launched Meat Without Drugs campaign asking retailers to stop selling meat from animals raised on antibiotics. They complained that after months of reaching out to Trader Joe’s that Trader Joe’s did not respond.

This past Thursday, Sept. 27, Consumers Union made a resounding statement to Trader Joe’s when they hand delivered more than 577,772 signatures to one of the busiest Trader Joe’s, the first Trader Joe’s in New York City and posted the video of their visit to Trader Joe’s on the web. They ask that viewers of the to video sign the petition at the end of the video, to forward the video to Trader Joe’s, and send the link on to family and friends.
I personally love shopping at Trader Joe’s; I think that they have the best staff, love the them! Corporate responsibility has to include to public health. So Trader Joe’s, I am hoping that you make some moves in the right direction.

By the way, Whole Foods Market recently announced that every personal care product making “organic” claims in its Whole Body Department has to have a third-party certification. As an organic product user, I am happy to hear that.
And, many manufacturers attending the Natural Products Expo recently held at the Baltimore Convention Center proudly displayed their new third party verification—Non GMO Project Verified. Yippee more genetically modified organism (GMO) free products should be on the shelves soon.
