Community Invited to Rosh Hashanah Shofar-Soundings

The celebration is part of Yom Ha-Zikkaron, the Jewish New Year, and will be held Sept. 5 and 6 in Pikesville.

Come hear the shofar sound in Pikesville during Rosh Hashanah.

The rams horn trumpet will be blown at 5 p.m. Sept. 5 and 6 at the home of Yitz and Sora Fleischman, during Rosh Hashanah—the Jewish New Year.

Known as Yom Ha-Zikkaron, the holiday celebrates looking to the past and making changes for the future.

And the shofar sounding harkens to Biblical times, "when a ram took Isaac’s place as an offering to G‑d," according to the Chabad of Park Heights website.

"We evoke Abraham’s readiness to sacrifice his son, and plead that the merit of his deed should stand by us as we pray for a year of life, health and prosperity," the site states.

The Fleischmans' home at 6721 Greenspring Ave., is where the soundings will be held, and Yitz Fleischman will do the soundings—30 blows.

Their home is best known as The Chanukah House that they decorate each winter in celebration of the Jewish Festival of Lights.

During that holiday, the community members—whether Jewish or not—are invited for the lamp lighting, performed by community leaders, including elected officials.

But the Fleischmans don't stop there. Rather, they've begun holding events for more Jewish holidays throughout the year.
