Area Teens Can Apply for Peer Tutoring Jobs

PeerGenius™ Tutors is currently accepting applications from top high school students in the Pikesville area to be paid peer tutors this fall. Get more information and apply at www.itspeergenius.com.

Twenty (20) top high school students from Baltimore County will be selected to be paid peer tutors this fall as PeerGenius™ Tutors, a Maryland based LLC, expands its operations in the county.

The company is currently seeking applications from high school students in the Pikesville and Lutherville-Timonium areas. PeerGenius™ Tutors is a private tutoring service that trains top high school students to help their younger peers in all K-12 subjects, study skills, organization and time management.

Teens who are outstanding overall students or who excel in a particular subject area will be contacted for interviews. In addition to academic achievement, extracurricular activities are also considered and at least five student athletes will be chosen.

Students can get more information and apply on the website at www.itspeergenius.com. Applications are due by Aug. 24 for fall assignments.

The company has started selecting local students and will be ready for the start of the new school year.

Stephanie Ekey, a rising junior at Franklin High School in Reisterstown, recently joined the PeerGenius™ team. "I heard about PeerGenius from my National Honor Society advisor and was excited to find a job that fits into my busy school schedule. I enjoy learning and helping others learn as well," she said.

Those students who are selected can choose the number of hours they work, when they work and which subjects they feel comfortable tutoring.

In addition to pay that is well above minimum wage, research has shown that peer tutors benefit in many ways from teaching other students. Teens who are gainfully employed are more likely to continue their education to pursue long-term career goals, and ultimately show an increase in lifetime earning potential, according to the Employment Policies Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit research organization.

Maryland’s teen unemployment rate for April 2012 was 19.7 percent, according to the organization.

“It’s also real work experience and a great item for college applications,” according to Enid Traub, President of PeerGenius™ Tutors.

There are over 500 research documents proving the effectiveness of peer tutoring, according to the ERIC Clearinghouse on Educational Management. Some of the documented reasons are that peers relate better, understand each other easily and peer tutors are closer to the curriculum, having recently succeeded in the same courses.

PeerGenius™ Tutors also has many client testimonials showing the peer tutor model is truly a concept that works.

“We’re very excited to give Baltimore County teens an opportunity to help their younger peers and gain valuable experience,” said Traub, President of PeerGenius™ Tutors.
