Traveling Washington and Beyond

Travel: Eddie Applefeld discusses a Washington hotel and walks, horseback riding in Ocean City, cruise ships tips and a view of the Grand Canyon.

Over the winter I had the opportunity to participate in a Capital Wine Festival held at Washington's Fairfax Hotel, 2100 Massachusetts Avenue, NW. I was served a four-course meal with a different wine accompanying each course. There are no wine festivals during the summer, but I'll alert you when they resume in the fall. However that doesn't mean you can't spend a night at the hotel.

It is in a very good location affording you the chance to sightsee. My first stop would be to take a five-block walk to the Washington Hilton, the location of the Reagan shooting. Now there's a covered spot for limos that wasn't there before the shooting.

Another walk would be along Embassy row, basically just outside the hotel. Turn left and stroll the Row to check out the beautiful embassies. Many have plaques so you can learn a bit about them.

The hotel has 229 rooms including 20 suites. When walking the halls be sure to check out the pictures and paintings of Washington scenes. For food and beverage you can try the 2100 Prime and the Fairfax Lounge.  The hotel offers a business and fitness center. Packages are available. Go to fairfax@embassyrow.com.

In light of the fairly recent tragedy off the coast of Italy regarding the Costa cruise ship, if you're going on a cruise you really shouldn't miss the lifeboat drill. Actually many lines make them a requirement. In an emergency knowing exactly what to do and where to go can save your life.

Believe it or not, you will be allowed to horseback ride in Ocean City from November 1 to March 30. You'll need a $50.00 permit for each horse. The location will be from 27th Street to the south end jetty.

The Grand Canyon Bridge has been selected by Travel & Leisure as the world's top new bridge. The skywalk allows tourists to walk out over canyon. I can't think of anything more frightening. Imagine staring a mile down while you're out on a bridge.
