Spend the Day in York PA

Take a trip to York, PA

People ask me all the time for suggestions for a daytrip or overnight.  I'm usually very happy to help.  Thanks to a recent trip I can now add York Pa to my recommended list.  First of all, it's only a short drive up 83 and secondly, there is plenty to do.  Space limitation limits my listing all there is to do, but the website will answer any lingering questions.

My first stop would be the York County Visitor Information Center off Route 30 on Eden Road.  There you can pick up a Visitors Guide and use it to find local attractions, lodgings and events.  Not only that, the center is located at the Harley Davidson Plant and that logically will be your next stop.

I took the one hour free tour and found it to be very interesting, even for me, who doesn't know the first thing about motorcycles.  For the biking enthusiast, there is the two hour paid tour.  The plant is 650,000 square feet with over 1,000 employees.  They ship about 227,000 bikes each year.  Thirty percent of which goes overseas.

From here I'd take the short drive downtown, park the car and go exploring.  Begin at the intersection of Market and George.  This is known as Continental Square and is basically the center of town.  If hunger has set in, here are two choices.  There's the York Central Market, (34 West Philadelphia Street) over 125 years old with about 50 merchants.  It's shaped like an upside down boat and you'll find most anything you want.  You can also try the White Rose Bar and Grill at the corner of Beaver and Philadelphia.  It's open seven days for lunch dinner with brunch on the weekends.

While in the Continental Square area I suggest a visit to the Yorktowne Hotel (48 East Market St).  It just might be the best place to stay in York County.  Inside is the venerable Commonealth Room, the county's only Triple A Diamond restaurant.  It has 121 rooms and dates back to 1925.

If you like baseball, yes the town has a baseball team.  They are known as the Revolution and play at Sovereign Bank Stadium downtown (yorkrevolution.com).   If you like shows or theatre, you might be lucky to catch one or the other at the stately Strand Theatre, 50 North George Street.  I'm hoping to go up there in May to see Neil Sedaka.

Here are some random suggestions for other attractions to visit:  New Grounds Roasting Company, Bluett Brothers Violin Factory, Wolfgang Candy Company, Police Heritage Museum and a brewery tour.

In short, York Pennsylvania has plenty to do and see.  For more information go to yorkpa/org.
