Daytripping in Delaware

A trip up I-95 to the Wilmington area will reveal many treasures.

This article will talk about two of them. We'll begin at the magnificent Winterthur, six miles north of the city on Rte 52.

This was formerly home to the Duponts. Today it serves as a showplace museum with 175 rooms. USA Today said it is one of America's 10 great places of historical proportions.

The current main exhibit is Uncorked: Wine, Objects and Tradition. You'll see more than 300 British and American wine-related items and learn a little about the historic role wine has played in the worlds of design, international trade and social life.

Winterthur is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 to 5. Adult admission is $18.

By the way, there is also a fabulous garden that is available for tours.

Space Out

One mile away is the Delaware Museum of Natural History.

It opened in 1972 as the state's only natural history museum. The main exhibit currently is "Earth From Space," a fascinating display of 40 detailed satellite images of earth.

If space is an interest to you then be sure to get there before it closes, which is Sept. 3.

Another exhibit is the always-popular dinosaurs.

You'll find two life-sized, Asian dinosaurs along with the Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Other displays include over 119,000 specimens of birds, 66,000 study skins and 11,000 skeletons. 

The museum is open seven days with adult admission only nine do. Unlike many museums, this one is easy to navigate. For more information go to delmnh.org.
