Corned Beef on Rye with Russian Dressing, Hold the Mayo

Suburban House: A deli in Pikesville, what a concept. Live entertainment, and house specials such as the Reuben and corned beef sandwiches.

What would Pikesville be without the Suburban House? The residents of that area learned what it was like when a fire in July of 2009 destroyed the building and many of the dining habits of those who would eat there several times a week.

It was not pretty.

Fortunately owners Joe Stowe and Mark Horowitz (since 1984) re-opened in a relatively short period at the location of the former Fuddrucker's in Pomona Square.

Opening day was not unlike opening day at Camden Yards. People packed the restaurant to see what it looked like and to taste the deli.

Open seven days from 8 to 8, the Suburban House is serving items that have kept the restaurant in business for decades. Deli items include house favorites the reuben and corned beef sandwiches, and matzoh ball soup.

As important as the food is, what also draws people in is the fact that most likely you'll know someone eating there. So you go over to their table and chat a bit.

It's almost like dining at a family function, table hopping is almost a required activity.

The restaurant seats about 250 (outside dining in season). It's casual, reservations are a good idea, dinners range from $7 to $13, there is plenty of parking, they do deliver and cater and there are daily specials.

The manager, David Hess, has been there 18 years and the chef has been there 28 years. Both Joe and Mark believe in giving back to the community which is why they were so involved with MADD and the Jewish Recovery House

One final thought, the first Monday of each month you can be entertained by the Night at the Copa Singers, which actually includes me as part of the ensemble.  Reason enough to check it out, don't you think.
