Today's Supreme Court Ruling and a Call to Action for the American Citizen

What does Today's ruling mean to the average American? Hopefully it means we will take the time to learn about the Affordable Healthcare Act ourselves, before casting our vote in November.

Too many times today I heard, “So, what did you think of the passing of the Healthcare Bill?” To which I responded, “The Healthcare Bill was already passed by our elected government officials, today just determined if the Affordable Healthcare Act was in fact Constitutional.”

The highest court in the United States of America, did in fact, deem it to be legal.  So now, the Affordable Healthcare Act will be signed into law. I hope that in all of today’s conversations surrounding the legality of the Healthcare Act, those conversations turn into energy.

Energy for United States Citizens to go out and research this Act. For the purposes of this blog and for time let’s shorten up the Affordable Healthcare Act into a nice little acronym AHA, that will save us both time. I believe the most positive consequence from the media attention of the Supreme Court ruling on the AHA, was making your average American Citizen realize that this will impact everybody, and will have very real consequences (positive or negative depending on your point of view) on everyday life here in the United States.

Being in Healthcare Administration I am asked all the time about the bill. Do I think it’s a good thing or a bad thing. My answer is always the same, no matter who misquotes me (I’m looking at you BBJ), “I have no idea.” I always try to think like an economist, follow the incentive, and there you will learn about people’s behavior. This scale of the AHA is so large, with so many different incentives, that nobody has any idea what is going to be the real impact. I don’t think anybody would argue that today’s healthcare is in need of reform, but I think the real question is, what should the cost of that reform be?

Should it be at the cost of sacrificing personal freedoms for the greater good? I’m not one to answer that question. But the American Citizen as a collective is the one to answer that question. November’s election, I pray, will be much more than Voting blue or red, elephant or donkey.

It should and will be about our rights as American Citizens. What is more important, the right to choose your own Healthcare Costs or your right to receive Healthcare benefits? Should you be able to do what you choose with your own income or should you be forced to purchase a product, that in all likelihood, is a very wise choice for your personal well being.

The AHA, is not a done deal, and November’s election is going to determine it’s fate. I hope the Average American Citizen takes the time, reads the bill, and decides what would be best for them, and for their families. It’s the Average American Citizens that is going to have to live with the consequences (good or bad) of this Act on a daily basis, not Mitt Romney or Barack Obama.

If everybody would take the time to learn about the AHA and vote accordingly, then we as a collective have made the decision that is right for this Country. After all, Mitt Romney and Barack Obama do not pay for this Healthcare Act, the Average American does.

So don’t listen to what they tell you about it, take the time, and read it on your own. As we learned in the Mortgage Meltdown of 2008, just because you didn’t read it in the contract, doesn’t mean it won’t have very real impact on your financial situation.
