Make Sure You Don't Get Sick this Holiday Season

Tips for staying healthy during the holidays, from Doctors Express in Pikesville: Use a dehumidifier, wash hands often, see a doctor at the first sign of flu, and more.

Around the holidays everybody is constantly surrounded by
people who we don’t normally see, and everybody always seems to come down with some sort of illness during the holiday season.

Here are some steps to help keep you healthy:

  1. WASH YOUR HANDS. So simple, but so important. We
are shopping for gifts, at the grocery store more often, and having people into our homes who normally wouldn’t be there during a regular week. We expose ourselves to germs at a much higher rate during the holidays than at other times of year.  Simply washing your hands with warm water and soap can prevent many illnesses around the holidays.
  2. Signs of FLU, get to the Doctor quickly. Even if
you think that it is just a stomach bug, you need to get checked out for
several reasons. First, if it is in fact the flu, and you catch it in the first
48 hours, TAMAFLU can be prescribed. You can save yourself a lot of missed
work/fun if it is treated immediately. Second, the first signs of Lyme’s
Disease are flu-like symptoms for several days. Lyme’s Disease is easily
treated if caught early, but if not detected until later on, it can greatly affect you for a very long period of time.
  3. Use a Humidifier in your bedroom. This helps
keep your sinuses healthy. When your sinuses dry out it leaves you prone to infection. Your mucus is a defense the body uses to help ward off germs and viruses, and when they dry out for a sustained period of time you are left vulnerable.
  4. Use saline spray to clear nasal congestion. This
also keeps your sinuses healthy. If that doesn’t work, before taking over-the-counter medications, get seen by your doctor.
