Lockheed Martin To Furlough 3,000 Workers

The defense contractor said that number could rise if the government shutdown is prolonged.

By Tim Lemke

Big defense contractor Lockheed Martin said it will furlough 3,000 workers beginning on Monday, and could increase that number weekly if there is a prolonged government shutdown.

The Bethesda-based company, which operates a number of offices in Anne Arundel County, said it was encouraging furloughed workers to take vacation time to avoid losing pay.

Lockheed said the furloughs would impact those employees who work in government facilities that are shuttered, or if their work required a government inspection. In some cases, employees have been furloughed because the government has issued a stop work order.
