Laissez Faire Finds Niche in Chalk-Paint Shabby Chic

A Cockeysville shop that was once an antiques vendors' showroom has landed a specialty: refurbishing furniture with chalk paint.

Using Annie Sloan decorative-paint and wax products, staff at the store and art studio paint directly onto wood, plastic and metal furniture—without stripping or priming—to create what co-owner Brittany Johnson calls a "shabby chic, old vintage" look.

Johnson and Cathy Johnson, her mother, sell chalk-painted furniture, accessories and gifts and hold furniture-painting classes two times each month.

"You can go to Goodwill and find a dresser for $15 and buy the paint and turn something awful into something beautiful," Brittany Johnson said.

The next class is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday. Reserve a spot in class by calling 410-299-2538.

The showroom, located at 10710 York Road is open from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
