Bicycle and Repair Shop Spins into Pikesville

Pikesville Bicycle Shop has rolled into town, offering bicycles for sale or build, as well as full-service repair, accessories and apparel.

Bernie Troutner, who used to do time trials and criterium races in the 1970s, has opened up Pikesville Bicycle Shop at 1416 Reisterstown Road, across from .

Marshall Troutner, Bernie's son, is a category 1 mountain biker who also works at the shop.

"We have everything any other bike shop would have," Bernie Troutner said. "If not, we can get it for you in two days."

Repairs are made in about one day, he added.

Numerous nearby stores, Pikesville's proximity to Interstate 695 and the fact that it's in an area full of great places to ride, helped persuade them to open their business in downtown Pikesville.

"It's a nice community with virtually every type of store in it," Bernie Troutner said. "This community has everything you need."

Also, Pikesville is at the center of a large community that isn't served by a bicycle shop, he added.

Inside the store are dozens of bicycles, from the red and white Fuji SST 3.0 for about $2,149, to the $109.99 Strider brand children's bike that teaches balance.

On the Strider, an 18-month-old child can push himself around, without pedals or a drive train, bypassing the need for training wheels, Marshall Troutner said.

The Troutners enthusiasm for cycling extends beyond their downtown storefront to the cycling community itself.

They plan to organize rides that start at the shop, beginning at the courtyard-type area next to the store.

The Troutners hope to attract current cyclists to the store and inspire new riders as well.

"It's easier to go riding when there's a full-service shop in your neighborhood," Troutner said.

The Troutners are a family that knows the bicycle business. Penny Troutner, Bernie's wife, has owned Light Street Cycles in Baltimore for the past 22 years.

Pikesville Bicycle Shop is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
