Not The Briefing Almond Had In Mind

Council Chairwoman Vicki Almond got an email instead of an expected in-person briefing on the early retirement incentive program.

The Baltimore County Council wanted an update on the recent offered to county employees and they got it.

But the email sent to council members prior to County Executive Kevin Kamenetz's budget speech Thursday was not exactly what Council Chairwoman Vicki Almond had in mind.

"We wanted someone to come talk to us," said Almond, adding that the council might have questions about the results of the program.

County officials hoped the incentive plan, passed last fall, would save as much as $15 million annually through the elimination of 200 positions.

Kamenetz announced that the program had exceeded those goals. More than 300 employees were approved for early retirement at an annual savings of $21 million, according to Kamenetz.

Almond said she learned of the results of the program in an email from Don Mohler, a spokesman and chief of staff to Kamenetz.
